How to Choose High-End Finishes Without Breaking Your Budget

Most of us are on a restricted budget, which means we can’t always do what we want. But if your aim is to create a luxury look for your home with high-end finishes, you don’t need to spend a fortune to do it.

With a little thought, a high-end look can often be achieved relatively cheaply. It often does not require expensive materials to achieve the effect you want because simple changes can sometimes make a lot of difference.

If you do want something that is high quality and expensive, it can often be obtained from second-hand stores, as a sale item or from websites such as eBay or Facebook Marketplace. It just takes a little patience and perseverance to find the bargain that makes all the difference.

Strategic Material Swaps & Smart Alternatives

In many cases, the desired effect can be simply achieved by altering the colour of specific items. Interior doors, for example, are often painted white, but changing to a darker colour can make them stand out. Boldness often makes them more conspicuous and adds a custom feel.

Natural materials also add a touch of class. Substitute solid wood for cheaper veneers and have marble rather than laminate for countertops and coffee tables. Antique brass, crystal and leather also produce a feeling of luxury and expensive taste that cheaper materials cannot do.

Many modern houses have standard light fittings, sometimes those that were fitted when the house was built. Replacing these can make a big difference, especially with something like chandeliers that need not be expensive, especially if you shop around, and add a touch of class, whether in traditional or modern styles. When installing a new light fitting, it’s often best to go for one that is slightly too large for a room rather than being undersized and not having sufficient light. On a similar theme, adding a new lampshade to an existing base can give the impression of a new lamp without the expense.

If you really want to go for the luxury look, taking note of quality hotels you have stayed at is not a bad idea. They almost always use white bed linen for that clean and crisp look, and similarly have white towels in the bathroom. Replicating their approach will give you that luxury hotel look at a little extra expense.

Swapping your old polyester fibre-filled cushions and pillows for ones filled with down or a down alternative can give a quick upgrade to your sofas and beds. If you retain your old covers but go for inserts that are a size larger, you will achieve that plump, well-filled look that is associated with luxury living.

High-quality and vintage furniture can sometimes be obtained relatively cheaply and can create that sense of style when substituted for more modern alternatives. And mismatching the furniture can often add to that sense, so don’t be afraid to mix and match to see the effect.

Impactful Details & Focal Points

Sometimes the whole appearance of a room can be changed by adding something that provides a focal point and makes a real impact. A large piece of wall art, for example, can instantly attract attention and make a real statement. With a little thought and inspiration, you may even be able to create your own piece from salvaged materials.

Wall mouldings and trims can add interesting detail, while something as simple as changing door knobs and drawer pulls to vintage or modern versions can make a real difference. Flowers and plants will also add interest and bring colour to a room.

Built-in furniture can be space-saving and attractive as well as being practical. Shelving, wardrobes and window seats will all bring a personal look and, if done with care, can be inexpensive as well as good-looking.

If used properly, curtains can enhance any room. If you set the curtain rods high above the windows and have floor-to-ceiling curtains higher and wider than the windows, this will make the ceilings seem higher and the windows appear wider. Have the hem of the curtains just touching the floor or, for a more romantic look, make them slightly longer so they ‘puddle’ on the floor.

Diffusers with essential oils or scented candles will overcome cooking smells and add fragrance to a room. Plants can also clean the air, and a large mirror placed opposite a window will reflect its light and help to brighten a room. Don’t be afraid to make a statement, including a mixture of old and new furniture to give an air of sophistication.

The Power of Design Fundamentals (Lighting, Colour, and Texture)

One of the first things you can do to give your home a more luxurious appearance is to declutter. You don’t have to go for a complete minimalist look, but removing unused and unwanted items will improve every room and make other changes easier. Put everything away properly for tidiness, and you can even put some items in display containers so they become a feature.

The use of colour is key to achieving the appearance you want. Neutral colours will provide a sophisticated base and can be used for walls, furnishings and curtains. Add a splash of bold colour for a dramatic effect, which can be easily changed to alter the theme or if you’re not keen. Wallpaper can also create a feature wall in contrast to paint used everywhere else.

Your choice of lighting can have a dramatic effect, and you should generally aim for three types of lighting in each room:

Ambient lighting for general use, such as ceiling fixtures and chandeliers.

Task lighting such as reading lights and table lamps.

Accent lighting that can include picture lights that create an atmosphere.

All three types add depth to a room and achieve different moods, with dimmer switches making them more adaptable.

Don’t be afraid to experiment and try different themes. It is surprising what you can achieve without having to spend a lot.
